His shoes actually are supposed to match! Ohtaka explained it in the vol. 3 omake.

Also, you can see him sitting barefoot in chapter 8. His shoes are both in front of him, but he’s still got the cloth wrapped around his leg.

Occasionally some of the promo/merch art has a line to differentiate between shoe and legwarmer (or w/e that’s supposed to be), but yeah, the anime really did make it look like a boot…
